Joyful Praise (MP3)
There are many things in life that make us happy and bring us joy. Often they can be small, seemingly insignificant things that are easy to overlook. Acknowledging and enjoying those things is part of what makes life worth living and is a way of expressing gratitude. Join me as we explore and acknowledge those little things that bring us joy.

On Neighbors and Love (MP3)
Faith traditions exhort us to compassion, love and respect for our neighbors. As a former president might have said, "it all depends on what you mean by 'neighbor' and what you mean by 'love.' "

Who is your Political Savior? (MP3)
Marcus Borg is a popular author, Jesus Seminar Fellow, and Professor of Religion and Culture at Oregon State University. At the end of a talk he gave recently, he told of being asked by an evangelical Christian whether Jesus is his personal savior and answering, "Yes, I can say that, but only if I can also say that Jesus is my political savior, too."

Speaking of Sin (MP3)
Here's a word you seldom hear in a UU setting! However, I hear it ALL the time at seminary. People often equate "sin" with hell and eternal damnation. But it isn't necessarily that dramatic. Join me as I reflect on how the word "sin" can be interpreted to have meaning in our lives.

Prejudices: the Everyday and the Malignant (MP3)
We all have prejudices. We develop these as we have experiences in the world. Some of these prejudices we are aware of and some we are not aware of. The more aware we are of them the better we can manage them. But sometimes prejudice can become malignant and destructive—this can happen on a personal, community or even a societal level.

A New Year's Wish--for a Sense and Taste of the Infinite. (MP3)
In an age when religion is all too famous for its close-minded dogmatists and self-righteous moralizers, the new year is an occasion to recall its deeper, wider, higher reaches. In such an age, two hundred years ago, one of liberal theology's founders did just this--speaking of a religious faith as, at heart, a keen sense and delight in living amid the infinite interconnectedness of all things. Themes from Friedrich Schleiermacher's classic speeches on religion to religion's cultured despisers pick up as strains of "Auld Lang Syne" fade away.

Making the Language My Own (MP3)
One of the ways that I have learned to navigate through a Christian seminary as a Unitarian Universalist is to develop my own translation for much of the language. Some of the words I'm going to keep and some I will probably discard. But regardless of what I do with the words, this translation process is something that is worthwhile and has value for all of us.

Theology and Worship (MP3)
This past semester I took a Worship class in seminary. The difficult part was that this was a Christian Worship class, so some of the things we did were minimally relevant to me, if at all. Of particular difficulty was the assignment to write a sacramental theology paper on Baptism and the Eucharist. Join me as I share how I navigated that class and what I learned.

The Sacred Quest for Knowledge (MP3)
Scholarship, the pursuit of accurate knowledge about our natural and our human environment, is supposed to be a mission, indeed a sacred value. Yet these days the mission is in some danger, both from political interests that favor standardized testing and from the cult of the expert within academia. How do we recapture the sacred quest for knowledge and connect it with love and the healing of society?
